# Abrogation of Article 370 and Reorganisation of Jammu & Kashmir

5 August 2019

On 5 August 2019, the Government of India initiated the constitutional changes that ended the special status previously associated with Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370. Parliament subsequently approved the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which reorganised the former state into the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir with a legislature and the Union Territory of Ladakh without a legislature, effective from 31 October 2019. The move represented one of the most consequential constitutional and administrative changes in India's recent history.
